The Netherlands is known as a country of bicyclists (over 22 million bikes in a nation of 17.9 million residents), but Dutch people drive and own cars too. The number of new cars sold in 2023 grew by 18.5% over 2022 to 369,791 units vs prior year of 312,129 units.

TOP 10 CAR BRANDS IN HOLLAND

#1 – VOLKSWAGEN 34,998 units (9.5%)

• The German auto maker reclaimed the title of most popular car brand in Netherlands after losing it to Kia in 2022. Volkswagen’s market share accelerated to 9.5% (the same as 2021) after dropping to 8.5% last year. Surprisingly, the brand only had 1 style among the Dutch top 10 car models – ‘Polo‘ at #6.
• The VW Corporation (which also includes the Audi, Skoda and Seat brands) collectively accounts for 20.6% of new cars sold in Netherlands in 2023.

#2 – KIA 33,504 units (9.1%)

• Despite losing the title of Netherlands number one car brand, the Korean auto maker still had a good year selling 3,500 more units year-on-year. It was also the only brand to have 2 models among the top 5 – ‘Picanto‘ at #2 and ‘Niro‘ at #5.

#3 – TOYOTA25,576 units (6.9%)

• The Japanese auto manufacturer retained its ranking as the third most popular car brand in Netherlands despite a market share drop from 8.1% in 2022 to 6.9% in 2023. Toyota was the only brand besides Kia to have 2 styles among the Dutch top 10 best selling car models – ‘Yaris Cross‘ at #9 and ‘Aygo‘ at #10.

#4 – BMW 20,529 units (5.6%)

• With the Netherlands and Germany sharing a border, it is no surprise that this premium Deutsche brand is one of the best selling in Holland. BMW sold 3,300 more units in the country last year compared to 2022, giving it a 5.6% market share, up one notch in ranking to #4.

#5 – SKODA 20,498 units (5.5%)

• This originally Czech brand, now a division of VW Corporation, had an outstanding 2023 in Netherlands. It sold 37% more units year-on-year, increasing its market share from 4.8% to 5.5%, and improving its rank from #8 to #5.
• Skoda’s best selling style in Netherlands was the ‘Enyaq‘ with 4,715 units sold (#13 best selling car model in Holland).

#6 – RENAULT 20,399 units (5.5%)

• The French brand performed well in Netherlands in 2023, selling almost 4,000 more units year-on-year, improving its market share to 5.5% (from 5.3%) and its rank up one to #6.
• The top Renault style was ‘Clio‘ with 4,693 units sold, the #14 best selling car model overall in Netherlands in 2023.

#7 – PEUGEOT19,395 units (5.2%)

• Unlike Renault, this French car brand had little to celebrate in 2023 as its sales in Netherlands dropped to 19,395 units (down from 21,237 in 2022). Its market share plummeted from 6.8% to 5.2% and it dropped 3 spots from #4 to #7 of best selling car brands in Holland.
• The Peugoet ‘208’ continued to be its top seller although it dropped from #1 car model in Netherlands in 2022 to #3 in 2023.

#8 – TESLA 19,388 units (5.2%)

• The American electric vehicle maker reaped the benefits of having a significant backlog of orders to fill in 2023 from 2022. After selling nearly 20,000 units, Tesla re-entered the Netherlands top 10 car brands at #8.
• The Tesla ‘Model Y‘ became the Netherlands best selling car model in 2023 (13,758 units, 3.7% market share). The Tesla ‘Model 3‘ was also a strong seller with 5,058 units coming in at #11 overall.

#9 – HYUNDAI 18,762 units (5.1%)

• The Korean brand underperformed in Netherlands in 2023 compared to its competitors. Its sales did increase by 1,700 units on 2022 (+10.5%), but it was below the total market increase of 18.5%. The result was Hyundai’s market share falling from 5.5% to 5.1% and its ranking down from #6 to #9.

#10 – VOLVO 16,352 units (4.4%)

• The originally Swedish brand sold 26.9% more units in 2023 in Netherlands increasing its market share to 4.4%, moving back into the top 10 among best selling car brands in Holland.
• The Volvo ‘XC40’ was the Netherlands 4th best selling car model in 2023.
