Babysitter calls the cops on children's mom for coming home too late (2024)

Babysitting can be a challenge when the kids are too rowdy or naughty.

But, at times, it is not the kids who are the source of a babysitter’s stress but the moms themselves.

One Reddit post made by a babysitter has gone viral because she decided to call the cops to take over the situation when the mom of the kids she was watching wouldn’t pick up her phone calls. The mother had said she’d be home much earlier because the babysitter had plans, but instead, it had been hours and she wasn’t returning the babysitter’s texts.

The kids’ Mom failed to meet the time she set.

On several occasions in the past, the mom had said she’d be home at a certain time but would always get home very, very late. She would sometimes go out to have “brunch” and would end up getting home around 7 pm.

The woman took to her Reddit account to share her experience:

“The mom is never home on time. She used to not give me return times but finally I started asking as it made it impossible to get anything done on the weekends. I’d go babysit so she could go to ‘brunch’ but she’d be gone from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. My whole day was gone. After that, she’d start giving me times but never stick to them. She wouldn’t even call to tell me, she’d just stay out.”

She had experienced a lot of occasions where the Mom would really take her time and arrive home whenever she liked, leaving the babysitter in charge for longer than they had initially agreed on. At one point, the woman finally had enough.

She had told the mother she had important plans that Saturday evening, but now the mother was nowhere to be found and was ignoring her calls.

“I call her, no response. Text, no response. Another hour. Nothing. Still calling and texting,” she wrote.

And then finally, the baby snapped and she knew she had to teach her a lesson.

“Finally, it is midnight. By this point, my plans are long ruined but I’m pissed and exhausted. I call her and leave a voicemail saying if she’s not home in the next hour, I’m considering the kids abandoned and calling the cops.”

Unfortunately, her voicemail did not make any difference.

The Mom was still out enjoying herself while the babysitter waited for her to be home to her kids. The babysitter finally decided to do what she thought had to be done.

She dialed the non-emergency line, waited for the cops to arrive, and then watched them try to call the mom themselves. It was not successful – as she had expected. Eventually, the cops took the kids to the police station so the babysitter could finally go home.

“I am awoken at 3 a.m. by a frantic call. It’s her,” the Reddit user wrote. “Where are the kids? Why am I not here? I tell her I followed through on my threat, check the police station. She cursed me out, I hung up and went to bed.”

The Mom came back to an empty home at 3 am.

The following day, the babysitter learned that the Department of Children and Families or the DCF was called on the situation. She also knew that the Mom was very, very angry at her. The babysitter got a call from her the next day, calling her various unpleasant names out of anger.

The involvement of the DCF somehow made the babysitter question if she had done the right thing or if she had been petty.

Many commenters agreed with the way she handled the situation.

“You were not being petty. She did abandon those children. She knew she did not have childcare for those 6 hours and chose to stay out of the home and make herself unreachable instead. Petty would be doing it after she’s late one time by an hour.”

Another comment agreed with her.

“One thing I’ve learned from True Crime is the wait 24 hours to file a missing person thing is a myth. She wasn’t where she said she’d be when she said and wasn’t responding to any communication. She was in fact a missing person at that point,” wrote one user.

Followed by another:

“And she was out of contact for over six hours. What if something had happened to her kids like they needed the emergency room?”

One important thing to remember when it comes to having a babysitter is being true to your promises unless emergencies surface and you can’t come back home as committed. Communication and being available to answer calls and texts are definitely important.

When the babysitters and parents get along, the kids are always in good hands.
